Measurements of dielectron production in Au + Au collisions atsNN=200GeV from the STAR experiment

Abstract: We report on measurements of dielectron (e + e − ) production in Au+Au collisions at a centerof-mass energy of 200 GeV per nucleon-nucleon pair using the STAR detector at RHIC. Systematic measurements of the dielectron yield as a function of transverse momentum (pT) and collision centrality show an enhancement compared to a cocktail simulation of hadronic sources in the low invariant-mass region (Mee < 1 GeV/c 2 ). This enhancement cannot be reproduced by the ρ-meson vacuum spectral function. In minimum-bias c… Show more

“…The detector performed extremely well during both runs and produced one of the most successful measurements of low-mass electron pairs in heavy-ion collisions. An enhancement of e + e − in the low-mass region was observed, consistent with the STAR results [30] and superseding the previous PHENIX results that showed a much stronger enhancement [31]. These results are now published and further details can be found in [13].…”

“…the ∆γ from the lower m inv region is affected by edge effects of the STAR TPC acceptance [205,208]. As seen in Fig.…”

“…The resonance peaks of K S and ρ are clearly seen. The large increase toward the low-m inv kinematic limit is due to the acceptance edge effect, where the OS and SS pair acceptance difference of the detector amplifies [205,208]. The right panel shows the ∆γ measurement as a function of m inv .…”

“…Although transverse mass scaling can not be expected to hold in general, it is often applied to p T spectra in situations, where parametrizations of particle yields are required for which no measurements are available. Estimates of hadronic backgrounds in direct photon [13][14][15][16] or di-electron measurements [17,18] are prominent examples where transverse mass scaling is employed. Furthermore, in such measurements, the parametrizations are usually extrapolated to lower and higher p T .…”
