Measurements of Lapping Plate Temperature

Abstract: Lapping process is commonly used for ultra-precision machining of various materials. An essential role during lapping plays flatness of the wheel-working surface because workpiece surface takes mirror image of it. Due to its applications requiring extreme size accuracy, straightness and concentricity, it is very important that working surface remains flat in the course of machining. Getting out of flatness can be caused by uneven wear or heating. To prevent nonuniform wear of lapping plate surface, conditionin… Show more

“…However, direct measurements of temperatures at the toll-chip-work piece interfaces are very difficult due to the cutting movement and the small contact areas involved. Because of these experimental difficulties, many analytical and numerical methods have been employed to predict machining temperature: the moving heat source method, the image sources method, the finite difference method, the semi-analytical methods and the finite element method [1,2,6,11,12].…”

As indicated in [11,12] some lapping parameters have influence on temperature rise of lapping plate.…”

“…Wheel flatness is the key to the operation of free-abrasive machining as lapped parts take a mirror image of it. Hence, to reduce deviations of workpiece flatness, a constant temperature of the wheel should be provided [5][6][7][8].…”
