Labuan, Miri, Kundasang and Raub regions of Malaysia have very different geological formations and settings that could result in different levels of natural radioactivity. Hence, this study determines the influence of different geological formations on radioactivity in these locations using field measurements, petrology and geochemistry. A total of 141 gamma dose rates and 227 beta flux measurements were collected using Polimaster survey meters (PM1405) in these four regions. The gamma dose rate values range from 0.37 to 0.05 µSv/h with a mean value of 0.11 µSv/h. Beta flux values range from 3.46 to 0.12 CPS with a mean value of 0.57 CPS. Mineralogy and elemental composition of the different rock types were analysed using thin-section petrography, XRD, ICP and pXRF methods. Felsic igneous rocks such as syenite and granite have higher natural radioactivity and contain more radionuclide-bearing minerals such as apatite, zircon, allanite, K-feldspar, titanite, muscovite and biotite. Metamorphic rocks have the second highest natural radioactivity and contain fewer radioactive minerals. The natural radioactivity of sedimentary rocks mostly depends on their clay content. The gamma dose rate maps show that igneous and metamorphic regions around Raub have higher radioactivity compared to the sedimentary-dominated regions around Miri and Labuan. Annual effective dose (AED) and excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) were calculated to evaluate the potential health risk for inhabitants of these regions. Labuan and Miri are considered to be safe zones with respect to natural radioactivity as the results show little to no risk for the public, compared with the Raub region, which is medium to high risk.

Bukit Fraser terletak di kawasan berbukit di Malaysia, kewujudan tanah runtuh pendam lama menimbulkan kebimbangan. Objektif kajian ini adalah untuk memperoleh pemahaman menyeluruh tentang keadaan tanah runtuh pendam lama melalui integrasi empat pendekatan utama iaitu analisis topografi, pemetaan lapangan, analisis petrografi dan kaedah keberintangan geoelektrik. Gabungan kesemua kaedah ini bertujuan untuk mengumpulkan data yang diperlukan bagi menggambarkan dengan tepat morfologi, sifat geologi dan keadaan subpermukaan. Lima garis tinjauan keberintangan geoelektrik telah dijalankan di pelbagai lokasi di sekitar kawasan Bukit Fraser. Bukit Fraser dicirikan oleh batuan granit sebagai unit geologi utama. Jenis batu, jenis tanah, tanah baki, zon tanah runtuh, zon sesar dan kehadiran jasad air yang ditentukan berdasarkan nilai keberintangan iaitu batu dasar granit (> 2000 Ωm), jenis tanah termasuk lempung dan lodak (50 - 200 Ωm), zon tanah runtuh (<100 Ωm), tanah baki (200 - 2000 Ωm), zon sesar (200 - 500 Ωm) dan jasad air (<100 Ωm). Zon tanah runtuh pendam lama ditafsirkan berdasarkan peta topografi dan data Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (ifSAR). Sebanyak 81 lokasi tanah runtuh terletak di zon tanah runtuh pendam lama direkodkan dari Januari 2021 hingga Mac 2022. Analisis petrografi dilakukan ke atas lima sampel batuan menunjukkan bahawa canggaan berlaku pada batuan, mineral yang terluluhawa, feldspar dihancurkan dan kuarza dihancurkan menjadi butiran kecil. Kesimpulannya, analisis topografi menunjukkan zon tanah runtuh pendam lama di kawasan kajian mengikut ciri seperti kerawang di bahagian kepala, cerun cekung di bahagian tengah serta topografi cembung dan morfologi seperti bentuk sudu. Maklumat ini membantu dalam kerja lapangan, analisis petrografi dan kaedah keberintangan geoelektrik. Analisis petrografi membantu memahami canggaan dan mineral. Kajian keberintangan geoelektrik telah dijalankan menggunakan zon yang ditafsirkan, tetapi hasil profil subpermukaan menunjukkan hanya garis tinjauan FH2 dan FH4 terletak di dalam zon tanah runtuh pendam lama.

The use of building materials containing high concentration of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORMs) may result in the increase of radiation dose rate inside the building. The assessment of radiological hazard in building materials is necessary due to the concern of radiological impact to the people in the building. NORMs present naturally in the environment, but the concentration of radionuclide such as uranium (238U), thorium (232Th) and potassium (40K) may increase due to anthropogenic activities. NORM at certain limit becomes hazardous to environment and human. Thus, the objectives of this study were to determine the level of natural radioactivity in Malaysia’s building materials and to assess the associated radiological risk of selected building materials. The selected material used were sand, soil, cement (white and black), bricks (sand and clay), marble and gravel. The assessment of NORMs in building materials were carried out and the concentrations of were determined using Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF). Activity concentrations of 238U, 232Th and 40K were found to be in the range of 13.93-60.09 Bq/kg, 3.44-128.14 Bq/kg and 2.11-1294.93 % respectively. The external hazard index for all building material samples is under the permissible limits (<1.0) except gravel (1.10). The external hazard index must be less than unity in order to keep the radiation hazard to be negligible. It is suggested that the radiological risk of raw material is predetermined before being used as building material.
