Measurements of the Atmospheric Mass, Energy, and Momentum Budgets Over a 500-Kilometer Square of Tropical Ocean

Abstract: The atmospheric budgets of mass, water vapor, heat, momentum, and mechanical energy have been analyzed for a 5-day undisturbed period (June 22-26, 1969) during the Barbados Oceanographic and Meteorological Experiment (BOMEX). Data were obtained from rawinsondes launched every 1% hr from the four corner ships of the BOMEX array. Computations were limited to the lowest 500 mb within a 500-km square centered a t 15'N, 56'30'W. The mass budget is characterized by mean, low-level divergence and downward motion. Max… Show more

“…The vertical eddy heat flux is almost confined below the inversion base and the value of the total heat supply from the surface is about 400ly day-1. The budget results during this period are quite similar to those in an undisturbed trade-wind flow in the tropics analysed by Augstein et al (1973), Holland and Rasmusson (1973) and Nitta and Esbensen (1974).…”

“…Recently, Augstein et al (1973), Holland and Rasmusson (1973) and Nitta and Esbensen (1974) examined the mass, heat and moisture budgets in an undisturbed Atlantic trade wind flow. In spite of the difference between the vertical thermal structure in the AMTEX area and that in the Atlantic trade wind region, mass, heat and moisture budgets found over both regions are quite similar to each other.…”

“…The SAM (System for Atmospheric Modeling), nonhydrostatic, anelastic large eddy simulation (LES) model version 6.10.3 (Khairoutdinov and Randall, 2003) was used to simulate the well-studied trade cumulus case of the Barbados Oceanographic and Meteorological EXperiment (BOMEX; Holland and Rasmusson, 1973;Siebesma et al, 2003). The BOMEX case is an idealized trade cumulus cloud field that is based on observations made near Barbados during June 1969.…”

“…It is interesting to note that the maximum descending velocity and the inversion were located approximately at the same level. A similar situation occurs also in the trade-wind region (e.g., Holland and Rasmusson, 1973;Soong and Ogura, 1976). Thus, low-level clouds over central Texas shown in Fig.…”
