Measurements of the Muon-Capture Rate inHe3andHe4

Abstract: In order to test the universality of the V-A Fermi interaction and the presence of the induced pseudoscalar term in the Hamiltonian, we have measured the rate of the reaction iT-\-He 3 -» H 3 +*> M . This reaction is closely analogous to the fundamental muon-capture interaction n~-\-p -» n-j-v^. We also have measured the total muon-capture rates in He 3 and He 4 ; that is, the rates for the reactions i u""+He 3 -> all final states and /z~+He 4 -> all final states. Negative muons were brought to rest in a high-… Show more

“…The experimental situation for reaction (1.2) is much clearer: after a first set of measurements in the early sixties [10][11][12][13], a very precise determination in the late nineties yielded a total capture rate Γ 0 =1496(4) s −1 [14], a value consistent with those of the earlier measurements, although these were affected by considerably larger uncertainties.…”

“…[22], except that we also include corrections in the vector current, which arise when the nonrelativistic reduction is carried out to next-to-leading order (proportional to 1/m 3 ). The resulting operator is given (in momentum space) by 12) where j (1)N R i (q; V ) is the standard leading order term…”
