Measures and planning for wetland restoration of Xianghe Segment of China’s Grand Canal

Abstract: Wetlands are critical components in the landscape of Xianghe Segment of China's Grand Canal (XSCGC) as they have many ecological functions such as water purification, habitat and biodiversity maintenance, and provide a lot of ecosystem services for human society. However, severe deterioration and destruction of the wetlands in XSCGC not only have caused the loss of ecological functions and ecosystem services, but also have threatened ecosystem health and stability of the Grand Canal. The restoration of wetland… Show more

“…The ecological service values based on the IFDCP in the low flow year, normal flow year, and high flow year were 7545.65-10,510.97 × 10 6 , 14,885. 401.01 × 10 6 , and 16,803.28-18,183.51 ×10 6 CNY, respectively, which were changed −45.32% to 23.83%, 7.86% to 18.85%, and 21.76% to 31.76% as compared with the initially planned scheme of 13,799.98 × 10 6 CNY. The ecological service values of different functional areas in the three scenarios are shown in Table 3.…”

“…The wetland ecosystem is one of the most significant ecosystems on Earth [5]. Only covering 6% of the total terrestrial ecosystem area, wetlands can produce about 45% of the ecological service value of the total terrestrial ecosystem on the Earth [6,7]. Due to the high ecological service value of wetlands, their water supply should be allocated reasonably.…”

“…Wetlands are considered to be one of the most productive ecosystems, providing a variety of ecosystem services such as fishery production, water conservation, water purification, biodiversity maintenance, recreation and ecological education [ 36 , 37 , 38 ]. While improving the ecological functions of wetland such as soil and water conservation, water purification and biodiversity maintenance, it is necessary to develop its cultural services from the aspects of aesthetics, recreation and ecological education [ 39 , 40 ].…”

“…Water is crucial for not only sustaining social and cultural relations through its numerous interactions with humans, but also sustaining biological life, in short, it has a socio-natural materiality [2]. Water canals have many ecological functions such as habitat and biodiversity maintenance, they provide a lot of ecosystem services for human society [3].…”
