Measuring adaptive expertise: development and validation of an instrument

Abstract: Individuals with adaptive expertise possess the skills to deal with novel problems. Whereas this concept has been around since the mid-1980s, no instrument exists that provides a good operationalization of the theoretical construct. This inhibits the further development of research on adaptive expertise and the evaluation of employees' adaptive expertise levels. Adaptive expertise has been unanimously described as a composition of domain-specific and innovative skills. Some researchers argue that metacognitive… Show more

“…After obtaining institutional ethical approval and informed consent, a copy of the questionnaire was forwarded to each instructor. The 11-item AEI (Carbonell et al 2016) is premised on adaptation as a multidimensional process. Participants were asked to anonymously complete the AEI by scoring responses to 11 questions (Table 2) with each item utilising a 5-point Likert scale.…”

“…Domain-specific and metacognitive skills are shared between adaptive and routine expertise (Carbonell et al 2016;Feltovich, Prietula, and Ericsson 2012). Though metacognitive capacity may not be a measure of AEx in itself (Carbonell et al 2016), innovation remains a defining characteristic of AEx. However this does assume that Hatano and Inagaki(1986) are correct in stating that AEx is built on routine expertise.…”

“…Being innovative also involves a life-long learning process where individuals must practice metacognitive reflection by continually questioning their current approaches and attempting to move beyond them (Bransford, Brown, & Cocking, 2000). Metacognitive skills are then crucial for developing innovation processes (Bohle-Carbonell, Könings, Segers, & van Merriënboer, 2016;Hatano & Oura, 2003). That is, individuals need to be both aware of what they know and do not know and able to utilize their monitoring skills to overcome their learning difficulties (Hatano & Oura, 2003).…”

“…Some scholars suggest that adaptability has multilevel characteristics (Burke et al, 2006 ) and is similar to resilience. Adaptability, at the individual level, has been studied using various terms such as individual adaptability (Chan, 2014 ), adaptive expertise (Bohle, Carbonell, Konings, Segers, & Van Merrienboer, 2015;Hatano & Inagaki, 1986 ), and adaptive performance (Pulakos, Arad, Donovan, & Plamondon, 2000 ).…”
