Abstract: Purpose: The study aims to investigate empirically the common alternative methods of measuring annual report narratives. “…The data collection included information and textual analysis of the documents with narrative examination, where the researchers carefully read the SR narrative related to the dam collapse. This ensured a better interpretation of the meaning of words and phrases (Abed et al, 2016), as we sought to identify the sections and any passages mentioning the accident in relation to the theoretical categories. Ex post facto content analysis was used, a predominant technique in research that seeks to relate legitimizing intent to disclosure (O'Donovan, 2002), based on the analysis of the narrative and content of sentences, which is essential in designing research through content analysis (Hooks & van Staden, 2011).…”

“…For example, there have been many studies of such reports to measure the themes and extent to which companies disclose information. These studies analyze not only mandatary components in corporate annual reports (Beattie et al, 2002) but also voluntary disclosures such as chairman's statement (Cleary et al, 2019), forward-looking statement (Abed et al, 2016), sustainability reports (Landrum & Ohsowski, 2018), social responsibility reports (Vuontisjärvi, 2006), and reports of management discussion and analysis (Qian, 2020). Studies using content analysis in more recent years have tended to focus on the evaluation of firms' performance through its linguistic representations in narratives (Gnanaweera & Kunori, 2018;Laskar, 2018;Raucci & Tarquinio, 2020;Solikhan et al, 2020;Uwuigbe et al, 2018;Xie et al, 2019) or on discriminating between financial restatement and accounting fraud (Azis et al, 2020;Blanc et al, 2019;Y.-J.…”
