Measuring county resilience after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake

Abstract: Abstract. The catastrophic earthquake in 2008 has caused serious damage to Wenchuan County and the surrounding area in China. In recent years, great attention has been paid to the resilience of the affected area. This study applied a new framework, the Resilience Inference Measurement (RIM) model, to quantify and validate the community resilience of 105 counties in the affected area. The RIM model uses cluster analysis to classify counties into four resilience levels according to the exposure, damage, and reco… Show more

“…Resilience has become a convincing theoretical construct in the post-disaster reconstruction literature, but its application under the Chinese context is still underdeveloped barring a few outputs (Li et al 2016). Moreover, pertinent research lacks qualitative analysis on the micro-geographic scale.…”

“…These variables are consolidated and used in various forms such as ranks, scores, and indices to provide a reliable framework from which decisions that affect individuals can be retrieved. A notable use of such indices includes Li et al (2016) andYoon et al (2016). The indices allow for tracking and comparability over time.…”

“…Developed previously by this research team (Baker 2009;Li 2011;Lam et al 2014b), the RIM approach aims to overcome two main issues in resilience assessment: empirical validation and inference. The RIM approach has been applied to assess the community resilience of U.S. counties along the northern Gulf of Mexico coast and earthquake resilience in China (Li et al 2015). The RIM approach, described in detail in the next section, is a statistical inferential method that includes the use of both K-means cluster analysis and discriminant analysis.…”
