Abstract: Recognizing the need for a valid and reliable way to measure outcomes of a program to promote multicultural awareness among nursing faculty and students, the authors developed a cultural awareness scale. “…The emergency of cultural dilemmas is presented by practitioners as well as in other assessments (Castro et al, unpublished data;D'Andrea et al, 1991) 25. I am able to accept when I need additional information to solve a cultural dilemma that appears during my internship, and I know how to obtain it (from books, the Internet and support material) Different strategies to cope with cultural dilemmas in practice are presented in other assessments as well (Castro, Dahlin-Ivanoff, & Mårtensson, unpublished data;Rew et al, 2003) Note: The complete list of items is not included as the reliability of the scale will be tested in an upcoming study. The authors are aware that statistical properties are relevant concerns regarding the usefulness of this kind of assessments (Gozu et al, 2007;Kumas-Tan et al, 2007;Shen, 2015).…”

“…The first two-hour session presented the intercultural communication and 41 followed by a guided discussion using questions from the Worlds Apart Facilitator's Guide. 42 Several assessment tools from the literature were considered for the project but found inappropriate for this study because they were not pertinent to dentistry, 43,44 were inappropriate for students, 45,46 measured self-reported data, 47,48 or were cost-prohibitive. 49,50 Because the investigators were primarily interested in assessing knowledge acquisition, a twenty-one-item survey of true/false and multiple choice questions was adapted from a quiz of cultural knowledge developed by Management Sciences for Health.…”

“…In their study, Rew et al stated that faculty might need to understand that, until students have developed their own cultural identities, they might not “be ready to assimilate information about people from diverse cultures” (, p. 250). Therefore, not only relational, but developmental aspects, are involved in being “ready” to grasp the skills involved in fostering cultural awareness.…”

“…To develop cultural awareness, we assume that our attention to unfamiliar patterns triggers a multi‐dimensional process with others. Therefore, cultural awareness is “learning to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, using interpersonal communication, relationship skills, and behavioral flexibility” (Rew, Becker, Cookston, Khosropour, & Martinez, , p.250). An article by Lester, described behavioral flexibility as developing insight and acting on it to change behavior ().…”
