Rhizopora apiculata is a common mangrove species found in tropical Asia, and it is also widely used by communities living near mangrove forests, including in Indonesia, due to its wood durability. This study aims to assess the status and utilization of R. apiculata, primarily by the fishermen community living near Muara Angke Wildlife Reserve in Jakarta Bay, Indonesia. The density of R. apiculata was determined by placing 100-meter-long transects from west to East in Muara Angke. While the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) of R. apiculata was studied using Landsat 8 satellite images with specific near-infrared and red wavelengths. The utilization of R. apiculata was assessed through interviews with 108 fishermen. The results showed that the west parts of Muara Angke had higher density, NDVI values, and canopy covers, with the R. apiculata density, NDVI, and canopy cover ranges being 3339.5-2856.3 Ha -1 trees, 0.79-0.99 percent, and 90-100 percent. There was a positive relationship between R. apiculata density, NDVI, and cover and the distance to the fishermen's village, decreasing NDVI trends toward villages. NDVI values in R. apiculata populations located far (> 1 km) from villages were higher, while NDVI values in R. apiculata populations located close (1 km) to villages were lower. Low density and NDVI values near the village were linked to fishermen's understanding and use of R. apiculata. This research can help to conserve and sustainably use the remaining mangrove community, primarily in Jakarta Bay.

Ekosistem mangrove memiliki peranan penting bagi eksistensi dan penyediaan jasa ekosistem kepada masyarakat di pulau kecil. Fungsionalitas mangrove sangat tergantung dari ukuran, struktur komunitas dan kualitas ekosistem. Penelitian tentang penilaian kualitas struktur komunitas mangrove pulau kecil telah dilakukan di Pulau Middleburg-Miossu sebagai rangkaian dari Ekspedisi Nusa Manggala 2018. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis struktur komunitas dan indeks kesehatan mangrove (MHI) mangrove di pulau tersebut yang dihubungkan dengan indeks-indeks vegetasi berbasis penginderaan jauh. Lokasi penelitian dibagi menjadi empat zona, dimana hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa zona terdepan didominasi oleh jenis Sonneratia alba (INP 263,32%) dengan persentase tutupan kanopi < 50%, ukuran diameter > 20 cm dan ketinggian tegakan yang lebih rendah. Sementara itu, tiga zona lainnya ke arah darat, didominasi oleh jenis Ceriops tagal dengan persentase tutupan kanopi >80%, serta kerapatan pancang yang cukup tinggi. Secara keseluruhan, kondisi kesehatan mangrove di lokasi penelitian termasuk dalam kategori sedang/cukup baik dengan rentang nilai MHI 38,7-60,7%. Kombinasi indeks vegetasi NBR, GCI, SIPI dan ARVI menunjukkan nilai koefisien regresi yang paling tinggi untuk memprediksi nilai MHI, yaitu 0,831, berdasarkan analisis AIC. Interpolasi nilai MHI berdasarkan model regresi linier terbaik menunjukkan bahwa 6,56 ha mangrove di lokasi penelitian atau 40.74% termasuk dalam kategori sehat.

The mangrove ecosystem holds a lot of potentials to be utilized by local communities in the Riau Coastline. Therefore, this study was carried out to assess the biodiversity of flora and fauna in the Riau Coastline mangrove ecosystem and its impacts on local communities. The transect was performed to identify soil conditions, distribution, and the dominance of flora species, while field observations and interviews with residents were conducted to determine the presence of fauna and discover the ecosystem’s benefit to the local community's economy. Based on the results, Rhizophora mucronata and Rhizophora apiculata has the highest relative dominance (RDC) and important value index in all observed stations. On the other hand, the fish/water biota species has the highest diversity and have economic that mostly serve as a catch for local fishermen. Ecotourism is also encouraged to boost the community's economy and aid ecological learning for sustainability purposes. The mangrove ecosystem's existence remains sustainable because fisheries are the main commodity, however, logging is less desirable as a source of income.
