Measuring Patient-Reported Health-Related Quality of Life in Velopharyngeal Insufficiency: Reliability and Validity of the Brazilian Portuguese Version of the VELO Instrument

Abstract: Objective: To test the Brazilian Portuguese velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) Effects on Life Outcome (VELO) instrument for reliability and validity. Design: Cross-sectional methodological study. Setting: Tertiary craniofacial medical center. Participants: Participants with VPI (VPI group, n = 60), with cleft and without VPI (no VPI/cleft group, n = 60), and with no cleft nor VPI (no VPI/no cleft group, n = 60) and their parents (n = 180). Interventions: All patients with VPI 8+ years old and their parents co… Show more

“…All patients underwent regular physical examinations at 1, 2, and 4 weeks and 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery, during which any sign of postoperative complication was observed. Speech assessment-related data 17,18 Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery • January 2022 were also collected. The principles outlined in the Declaration of Helsinki were followed.…”

“…For both univariate and multivariate analyses, P-values of< .05 were considered statistically significant. For secondary analyses, the Bonferroni P-value correction was applied, and the adjusted P value for statistical significance was .005 (Denadai et al, 2019).…”

“…Table 2 shows the relationship between the VELO total score and domains and the patients' age groups. Considering the age distribution of the patients, the patients were divided into 2 groups with a cut-off value of 8 years to evaluate the effects of age (Denadai et al, 2019).…”

“…Another way of understanding the clinical implications of VPI is through quality of life (QoL). Although the severity of VPI from blinded assessment is important, studies have found that those with any severity of VPI have QoL that is significantly worse than either patients with CP without VPI or normal controls (Denadai et al, 2019). Additionally, previous work identifying the association between VPI severity and QoL has shown a correlation but has also shown that those with any severity of VPI can have severely impaired QoL (Skirko et al, 2013; Bhuskute et al, 2017).…”
