Measuring Positive and Negative Affect in a School-Based Sample: A Polish Version of the PANAS-C

Abstract: Students in Grades 4-6 (N = 722) completed a Polish-language version of the Positive and Negative Affect Scale for Children (PANAS-C; Laurent et al. Psychological Assessment, 11, 326-338, 1999). The psychometric properties of the Polish PANAS-C were examined using methods employed by other validation studies. Additionally, two alternative models suggested in the literaturea 10-item PANAS-C (Ebesutani et al.

“…It uses a 5-point Likert scale (ranging from 1 = very slightly or not at all to 5 = very much or extremely), where higher scores indicate a higher level of valence of the mood descriptors. Many studies (Beltrán-Morillas et al 2019;Wróbel et al 2019) have demonstrated good internal consistency for both positive affect (α = 0.86 to 0.90) and negative affect (α = 0.84 to 0.87). Test-retest reliability was reported as 0.79 and 0.81 for positive and negative affect respectively, after one week (Watson et al 1988).…”

“…Previous studies have also shown that the frequency of depressive symptoms generally rises during the transition from childhood to adolescence, but only in girls (Compas, 1997;Hankin et al, 1998;Petersen, Sarigiani, & Kennedy, 1991;Tweng & Nolen-Hoeksema, 2002;Kalebić Jakupčević & Reić Ercegovac, 2016). Furthermore, previous studies pointed to poorer emotional well-being in girls during adolescence (Yeo, Ang, Chong, & Huan, 2007;Wrobel, Finogenow, Szymanska, & Laurent, 2019). These differences may be interpreted in the context of various theoretical models, and some of the interpretations involve the girls' large focus on physical looks and the dissatisfaction with it, which is significantly higher when compared to boys' (Yates, Edman, & Aruguette, 2004).…”

“…The original PANAS-C includes 27 items whereas the reduced version PANAS-C includes 10 items. Recent studies suggest that the 10-item PANAS-C fits the two-factor model better, with advantage of easy use and time-saving, especially when the time is limited and the test battery is long [12,39]. The 10-item PANAS-C and the 10-item I-PANAS-F is comparable in length but different substantially in contents, in which no overlapping item in PA scale and only one same item (afraid) in NA scale.…”
