Measuring quality of recovery-15 after day case surgery

Abstract: The QoR-15 is a clinically acceptable and feasible patient-centred outcome measure after day case surgery. The score demonstrated good validity, reliability and responsiveness. However, measurement of the QoR-15 score on the day of surgery may not provide a true baseline value. We suggest one follow-up call at 48 h would enable an adequate patient-centred assessment of postoperative recovery after day case orthopaedic surgery.

“…Currently, the commonly used postoperative recovery quality scales were QoR-40 [ 24 ] and QoR-15 [ 25 ]. However, both of them are developed and verified in non-obstetric patients and day surgery population [ 26 ], so there are many items unrelated to cesarean section, and lack of critical elements to evaluate postoperative recovery after delivery such as the ability of caring babies [ 18 ]. The ObsQoR-11 scale has been proved to be reliable, clinically acceptable, feasible and effective in patients undergoing elective and emergency cesarean section [ 18 , 27 ].…”

“…The QoR-15 score was developed to determine a self-rated patient measure of overall health status [6] and has undergone psychometric and external validation [17]. The QoR-15 score is easy to administer and has been validated to detect clinically important differences in patient-perceived health status [32].…”

“…Based on results from a study examining the psychometric properties of the quality of recovery (QoR-15) evaluation [6, 17], we estimate the overall change from baseline to follow-up in untreated patients will be approximately 5% of the instrument total, or +7.5 points. We powered the study to be able to detect a clinically relevant change of 10% (+15 points) in the treatment group, with a standard deviation of 12 points.…”

“…The duration of surgery was defined as from anesthesia induction to removal of the airway. The Quality of Recovery-15 (QoR-15) scale (14) and the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) (15) were used to evaluate recovery and pain status at 6 and 24 h after surgery. The two scales were administered by the same clinician with 10 years of experience in anesthesiology.…”
