Measuring the leptonic CP phase in neutrino oscillations with nonunitary mixing

Abstract: Non-unitary neutrino mixing implies an extra CP violating phase that can fake the leptonic Dirac CP phase δ CP of the simplest three-neutrino mixing benchmark scheme. This would hinder the possibility of probing for CP violation in accelerator-type experiments. We take T2K and T2HK as examples to demonstrate the degeneracy between the "standard" (or "unitary") and "non-unitary" CP phases. We find, under the assumption of non-unitary mixing, that their CP sensitivities severely deteriorate. Fortunately, the TNT… Show more

“…Thus, the standard three-family oscillations explored at DUNE (and the other present and near-future oscillation facilities) will be free from the possible ambiguities that could otherwise be induced by this type of new physics [62][63][64][65]. While these bounds on nonunitarity are too strong for these effects to be probed at present and near-future facilities a Neutrino Factory [66,67] could be precise enough to explore these effects [24,29,68].…”

“…Such measurement is of practical importance when a hint of heavy neutrino mixing were discovered but were not conclusive. The mass hierarchy and δ C P measurement in the presence of heavy neutrino mixing has been investigated in a general context [25] and for the T2K, T2HK, NOνA and DUNE experiments [26][27][28][29].…”
