Measuring Urban Form Units: Alternative for Characterizing Urban Growth Pattern in Yogyakarta Urbanized Areas

Abstract: Yogyakarta is one of city in Indonesia which experience urban agglomeration called by Yogyakarta Urbanized Area (YUA). In this paper, identified the characters of each part of YUA by examining its urban form unit. This paper assesses the characteristics of urban forms distributed within YUA. “…This finding supports the result of Moran's I analysis, which shows the existence of agglomerations of both big and small-scale retail in this area. The area is a suburban area with moderate to low compactness (Devi et al, 2020), and it has become the location for the growth of YUA, which is expanding towards the northeast (Wijaya & Umam, 2016). The urbanization process in Sleman and Bantul Regencies occurred directly adjacent to Yogyakarta City (Sudrajat, 2016).…”

“…In addition to Yogyakarta, six districts in the Sleman Regency (Depok, some areas in Ngaglik, Mlati, Godean, Gamping and Ngemplak) and three districts in the Bantul Regency (Kasihan, Sewon and Banguntapan) are included in the YMA (see Figure 1 below) [51]. The YMA faces urbanisation and congestion simultaneously, as do other agglomeration areas [52]. Its growth and development as an educational centre, and its many renowned attractive tourist attractions are increasingly encouraging people to settle to work, study or develop business.…”

“…Size by population Since industrialization, many industrial cities such as England, China, and the USA have swiftly transformed polycentric urban settlement structure into a megalopolis (Huang, Tan, Liu, Chu & Kong, 2020;Kurnia devi, Mari Fitria, Roychansyah & Herwangi 2020;Zheng & Kahn, 2008). So, rural settlements have to reconstruct rural productions, lifestyles, natural systems, and sociocultural structures.…”
