The study presented some haematological parameters and production characteristics of novel crossbred Romanov × Hissar and purebred Romanov sheep. A number of biochemical and haematological tests were performed to assess the level of adaptation of F1 crossbred progeny to local rearing conditions and evaluate its potential economic benefits for industrial production. The newly created crossbreed demonstrated significant increase in carcass production characteristics, with pre-slaughter weight increased by 29.2%, slaughter weight - by 39.7%, cooled carcass weight - by 40.5% and total yield ‒ by 8.2% compared to Romanov purebreed. The meat quality was also increased: fat content remained at the same level (6.6-6.8%), carcasses of F1 crossbreed lambs had higher relative weight of muscle tissue (78.8% vs. 73.3%), increased content of the 1st grade meat (94.6% vs. 91.6%), and higher caloric value of the meat (by 8.7%) compared to the parent purebreeds. An increased erythrocyte (by 3.1%) and leukocyte (by 6.45%) count was noted in the F1 rams. Haemoglobin level in F1 lambs was increased by 4.2%. Protein metabolism parameters were improved: blood serum total protein level ‒ by 11.2%, albumin ‒ by 11.4%, globulin ‒ by 10.4%, suggesting intensified protein metabolism in F1 lambs; this was also evidenced by the increased activities of aspartate transaminase (by 3.9%) and alanine transaminase (by 16.6%) in F1 lambs over Romanov purebred animals. Blood serum of crossbred lambs had higher bactericidal (by 1.92%), lysozyme (by 3.53%), and phagocytic activity. The increased haematological and biochemical parameters and enhanced antibacterial properties of serum indicate the enhanced metabolic activity in F1 crossbreed sheep and underlay the improved meat production parameters. Obtained results demonstrate increased adaptation of the novel crossbred to industrial rearing conditions and local microclimate of steppe zone of Ukraine, which is undergoing gradual aridization.

Breeding and breeding work with sheep of the Askanian thin-fleece breed is aimed at increasing meat productivity, creating precocious animals with well-defined meat forms and improved qualities of merino wool. The purpose of the work is to identify the features of productivity indicators of Taurian rams of the Askanian fine-wool breed, taking into account their live weight and using the obtained data during breeding and breeding work with animals. To conduct research, groups of lambs with different indicators of live weight were assembled: Group I - live weight up to 65.0 kg; II group - live weight 66.0-70.0 kg; III group - live weight of 71.0 kg and more. The total number of experimental livestock was 45 heads. The lambs of the third experimental group had a live weight of 73.0 kg. Their advantage over the rams of the first group was 10.8 kg, or 14.8%. The difference between the rams of the second and third groups was 5.0 kg, or 6.8%. A higher shearing of unwashed wool was also noted in the rams of the third group - 7.3 kg. Their advantage over the rams of the first group was 0.9 kg, or 12.3%, and the second 0.2 kg, which is 2.7%. The lambs with a higher live weight (III group) also had a higher cut of washed wool, which, respectively, amounted to 4.0 kg. The yield of washed fiber in rams had an optimal value for sheep of the Taurian type of the Askanian fine-wool breed and ranged from 50.0 to 54.8%. The difference in shearing of washed wool between lambs of the first and third groups was 0.8 kg, or 20.0%. According to such features as length, tone and density of wool, a significant advantage of the experimental stock over the regulatory requirements for the breed was noted. To pay special attention to the improvement of such parameters of wool productivity of Taurian type rams of the Askanian fine-wool breed, as the density and tone of wool, in particular, in animals with low indicators of live weight, which will positively affect the overall level of wool production in the farm.

The main aim of this paper is to analyze the influence of genetic and non-genetic factors on the birth weight and weaning weight of lambs. The study was carried out on the basis of the Institute of Animal Husbandry of Steppe Regions named by M. F. Ivanov “Askania-Nova” – the National Scientific Agricultural Center in Sheep Breeding of NAAS. Birth and weaning weights data collected during a 5-vear period from 3961 lambs were used. The reproductive traits of the Ascanian fine-fleece (AC) ewes were evaluated in combination with the rams of different genotypes: Ascanian fine-fleece, Australian merino (AM) and half-bred animals (1/2AC+1/2AM). The main effect of the ram genotype and the year of lambing, the age of the ewes, the litter size, the sex of lamb and the sex ratio in twins on the birth weight and weaning weight of lambs was analysed using one-way ANOVA. Differences between years of the 5-year period were highly significantly (P < 0.001) for all lamb traits studied. The effects of the environmental factor (year of lambing) on the birth weight and weaning weight of lambs represented 27.2 and 15.2 per cent of the total variance, respectively. The ram-group effects, which are mainly genetic differences, were highly significant (P < 0.001) in all traits. Age of dam had significant effect on the birth weight of lambs (P = 0.048) and was relatively unimportant as a source of variation. Two-year-old ewes bore lighter lambs than older ewes. There were no significant differences in the weaning weight of lambs from the ewes of different age classes. Survival rate was related to birth weight of lambs. Lamb survival increased up to a birth weight of 4.0 kg and only declined when they weighed more than 5.0 kg at birth. Our results showed that singles were 0.61 kg heavier than twins at birth and were 2.42 kg heavier than twins at weaning. Litter size (type of birth) was responsible for 42.5 and 10.0 % of total variability in birth and weaning weights of lambs, respectively (in both cases: P < 0.001). Average birth and weaning weights of male lambs were higher than the females (in both cases: P < 0.001).
