Mechanical and thermal properties of tungsten carbide – graphite nanoparticles nanocomposites

Abstract: Previous studies concerning pure tungsten carbide polycrystalline materials revealed that nanolayers of graphite located between WC grains improve its thermal properties. What is more, pressure-induced orientation of graphene nano platelets (GNP) in hot pressed silicon nitride-graphene composites results in anisotropy of thermal conductivity. Aim of this study was to investigate if addition of GNP to WC will improve its thermal properties. For this purpose, tungsten carbide with 0.5-6 wt.% of GNP(12)-additive … Show more

“…Cemented carbides have replaced high-speed steels in metalworking and mining. Cemented carbides are metal-ceramic composites that consist of hard tungsten, titanium, and tantalum carbide grains located in a ductile matrix (binder) based on cobalt or nickel and have a unique combination of high hardness, wear-resistance, and toughness [10]. By now, a large number of cemented carbide grades have been developed, with diverse combinations of components both in the carbide phase and in the binder.…”

“…The hexagonal crystalline single layer of graphite (the simplest form and one of the most important crystalline allotropes of carbon atoms having a C•C bond distance of 0.142 nm) has received massive attention in the field of sensors, bio-medicals, composite materials and microelectronics. Thus, graphene is the strongest and best conductive material [19]. Graphene platelets or multi-layer graphene has been used as toughening additives to enhance the mechanical properties of various cutting tool materials [20].…”

“…To increase the properties of coated layer, tungsten carbide was mixed with the other metal like cobalt and nickel in proportion to further increases the properties. However, the added metal resulted in the decreasing of properties like hardness, resistance, operating temperature [1]. WC coating had various applications in many different industries because of protection it provided against the wear at various different temperatures [9].…”

“…These properties make them most desirable materials for potential applications such as cutting tools, forming dies, and other wear applications [5]. Tungsten carbide (WC) is very desirable material due to its attractive mechanical, physical and chemical properties such as high hardness, high melting point, good electrical and thermal conductivity, and high corrosion resistance [6]. So, carbides used for thermal energy storage and release [7,8], enhancement the optical and electrical properties of polymers [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17].…”
