Mechanical behaviour of grouted sleeve splice under uniaxial tensile loading

Abstract: This paper presents an experimental and analytical study on mechanical behaviour of two kinds of new low-cost grouted sleeves processed by seamless steel pipe, i.e., grouted sleeve with wedge and grouted sleeve with wedge and thread, under uniaxial tension. In total, twenty-two rebar splice specimens with various embedded lengths, spliced bar diameters and wedge lengths are prepared and tested. The test results indicate that the performance of both grouted splices meets the requirements of ACI318 and JGJ107. T… Show more

“…Since all types of grouted sleeve are not available in the market for the long grouted sleeves and the commercial sleeves are expensive due to the use of high-strength materials and the complex manufacturing processes, two low-cost grouted sleeves, i.e. grouted sleeve with wedge (GSW) and grouted sleeve with wedge and thread (GSWT) previously developed by the authors [51] were used in this study (see Fig. 3).…”

“…An analytical model was proposed to assess the bond-slip behavior of the grouted sleeve connection with a long embedment length. Lu et al (2019b) measured the mechanical properties of the wedge-shaped and wedge-shaped thread grouted sleeves under uniaxial tension, studied the influence of the embedding length of the steel bar, the slope of the wedge and the thread of the sleeve. Kuang et al (2019) proposed that the content of the grouted material in the sleeve affected the failure modes of the connection (pull-out failure or broken failure) and the bearing capacity.…”

“…The corrugated duct, which in the presence of a concrete matrix facilitates longitudinal stress transfer, exerts a uniform compressive field unto the grout, restraining it from splitting failures. Previous experimental observations [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] highlighted this composite nature and indicated clear deviation from the assumed code treatment.…”
