Mechanical behaviour of soil under drying–wetting cycles and vertical confining pressures

Abstract: A system for preparing soil specimens subjected to drying-wetting cycles whilst under vertical confining pressures is introduced with Clayey soil specimens subjected to different drying-wetting histories, then the relative performance tested using consolidated undrained triaxial shear tests. Meanwhile, their soil water retention properties were also measured. The experimental results indicate that drying-wetting cycles lead to a rise in the matric suction for soil with high moisture content, and the decrease o… Show more

“…This combined effect and relationship between precipitation and storm surge has previously been investigated by Svensson and Jones [28]. These studies emphasize that univariate flood frequency analysis falls short when assessing extreme events caused by interconnected random variables [29][30][31][32]. But until now, to our knowledge, limited research has explored the compound impacts between storm surges and flood variables in coastal areas for distinct pair combinations.…”

“…Consequently, an individual particle's extremum and the population extremum are continually refined based on the fitness values of the newly evaluated particles. This iterative procedure continues until the predefined termination condition is met [64].…”

“…This, in turn, allows for the treated soil to be repurposed directly within engineering projects. These methods include electro-osmotic consolidation [7,8], vacuum preloading [9], soil stabilization with lime and cement [10][11][12][13], and geosynthetic reinforcement [14][15][16][17]. Among these methods, geosynthetic treatment is notably recognized for its cost-effectiveness and environmentally friendly attributes [18,19].…”
