Mechanical Performance of Unstitched and Silk Fiber-Stitched Woven Kenaf Fiber-Reinforced Epoxy Composites

Abstract: Fiber composites are known to have poor through-thickness mechanical properties due to the absence of a Z-direction binder. This issue is more critical with the use of natural fibers due to their low strength compared to synthetic fibers. Stitching is a through-thickness toughening method that is used to introduce fibers in the Z-direction, which will result in better through-thickness mechanical properties. This research was carried out to determine the mechanical properties of unstitched and silk fiber-stitc… Show more

“…However, over the past 20 years, SFs such as ceramic fabrics, carbon fibers, glass fibers, basalt fibers, and polymeric fibers have received special attention [ 5 , 6 ]. Because SFs provide high strength and inertia, they are widely used in the production of advanced composite materials in aerospace and automotive environments [ 7 ].…”

“…An infrared thermal imager is used to monitor the peak temperature of weld joint during FRW. Three-point bending tests [31][32][33] and impact tests [34,35] are applied to evaluate the mechanical properties of the specimens after FRW. Optical microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy were used to investigate the microstructure of welding zone.…”

“…They are have limited applications in other fields, such as civil engineering, packaging, agriculture, medical aircraft, aircraft, electronics, etc. 15,16 As the world's largest textile exporter and producer, China plays an important role in the global textile supply chain. 17 Approximately 45% of textiles produced in China are wasted, ranging from pre-consumer waste composed of fabrics, materials, and clothing processing, to post-consumer waste when discarding used clothing.…”
