Mechanical Properties of a Lithium Disilicate Strengthened Lithium Aluminosilicate Glass‐Ceramic

Abstract: A glass composition in the Li 2 O-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 (LAS)-ternary phase diagram is presented, which enables the crystallization of Li 2 Si 2 O 5 as well as LiAlSi 2 O 6 upon a well-defined heat treatment. Li 2 Si 2 O 5 is the minor crystalline phase in the glass-ceramic and generates through the bulk strengthening of the LAS glass-ceramic. A flexural strength as higher as 400 MPa is measured in the proposed glass-ceramic formulation, thus outperforming conventional LAS-glass-ceramics. A combination of the presen… Show more

“…For example, average linear thermal expansion coefficient of β‐spodumene (LiAlSi 2 O 6 ) is only 0.9 × 10 −6 K −1 and β‐eucryptite (LiAlSiO 4 ) even has a negative average thermal expansion coefficient (–6.2 × 10 −6 K −1 ) . The low thermal expansion property of LAS have wide range of commercial and technological applications, ranging from thermal shock‐resistant stove cooktop plates, telescope mirrors, to high‐temperature furnace windows …”
