Mechanical properties of Aluminum-Copper(p) composite metallic materials

Abstract: Composite metallic materials (CMMs) are prepared by dispersing copper particulates in aluminum matrix using stir-cast technique. Their behavior is compared with the alloy having similar composition. The effect of particulate composition is studied by varying the copper concentration between 5 and 15 wt%. Hardness increased with increasing particulate contents in both cast and homogenized conditions. Composites show a 13% drop in strength and 15% drop in strain compared to the alloy. With increasing reinforceme… Show more

“…The tensile and impact strength increases with increase in grit size of the SiC particles. Siddabathula Madhusudan et al [18] investigated the mechanical properties of aluminum matrix reinforced with copper particulates. The different composite was fabricated by varying the weight percentage of copper 5% and 15%.…”

“…The porosity levels of cast composites were measured and chosen to be in the range of 2-4%. These porosity levels were slightly elevated due to the composite slurries still having gas and the casting having been carried out in the open atmosphere but could be considered reasonable due to casting conditions [29,43,44]. influence the increase in the porosity of composites was insufficient to explain the gaps between adjacent ash particles due to expected increases in the effective viscosity of casting melts resulting in a higher gas holdup [40] and improper feeding of liquid metal [37].…”

“…So far, few ceramic materials are used as the reinforcing materials like SiC, B 4 C, Si 3 N 4 , Al 2 O 3 , Y 2 O 3 , TiC and TiB 2 , and so on, in metal matrix composites [15][16][17][18]. Among these ceramic reinforcements, amorphous silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4 ) is selected as the reinforcement used in the present study owing to its good mechanical, thermal and electrical properties, superior corrosion and good thermal stability [19][20][21].…”
