Mechanical Properties of High Temperature Vulcanized Silicone Rubber Aged in the Natural Environment

Abstract: Composite insulators operate in harsh field environments all year round. Their various properties and states of aging require attention. It is important to study the performance changes of composite insulator sheds after aging to evaluate the life of insulators operating on grids. For this reason, 22 composite insulator sheds from different factories, with different voltage levels and different ages years were selected to conduct mechanical properties testing. The mechanical properties include hardness, tensil… Show more

“…Then, some obvious aging behaviors, such as chalking and cracking, emerge on the material surface, which help guide site maintenance. The structural changes in this aging experiment are highly consistent with those observed in the aging of insulators in the field [37]. Besides, as discussed in mechanical properties, the elongation at break of HTV-SR eventually decreased by 24.1%.…”

“…The first stage is the weight loss stage of aluminum hydroxide, and the main decomposition product is water. The weight loss in the second stage was mainly the thermal decomposition of PDMS [47]. Similar to the previous stage, the more serious the aging, the less PDMS available for pyrolysis.…”

“…As of 2016, silicone rubber composite insulators accounted for more than 40% of China's outdoor insulators. However, silicone rubber is an organic insulating material with insufficient weather resistance [7,8]. The service life of silicone rubber composite insulators is generally only 10-20 years, which is much shorter than that of porcelain or glass insulators (up to 50 years or more).…”
