This paper presents and discusses the experimental study on the mechanical properties of LBL column both under axial and eccentric compression. The results shows that the ultimate load for the eccentric compression specimens with the eccentricity values of 30 mm and 110 mm are 95.2 kN and 31.8 kN respectively. Eccentricity is one of the main influencing factors for the ultimate bearing capacity of the LBL columns. Because of the vulnerability of the mechanical connections or natural nodes to tensile stress and secondly, laminated bamboo is vulnerable to defects that has more detrimental influence on the tensile resistance of the material. The variation in strain for the laminated bamboo lumber column sections is linear throughout the loading process, following standard normal section bending theory which is similar as that for the beam.

This study presents a new structure made up of bamboo scrimber and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) to address the low stiffness and strength of bamboo scrimbers. Three-point bending test and finite element model were conducted to study the failure mode, strain-displacement relationship, load-displacement relationship and relationships between strain distribution, contact pressure and deflection, and adhesive debonding. The results indicated that the flexural modulus and static flexural strength of the composite beams were effectively increased thanks to the CFRP sheets. The flexural modulus of the composite specimens were 2.33-2.94 times that of bamboo scrimber beams, and the flexural strength were 1.49-1.58 times that of bamboo scrimber beams. Adhesive debonding had a great influence on the strain distribution and deflection of the composite specimens. It was an important factor for the failure of the CFRP-bamboo scrimber composite specimens. According to the finite element simulation, the strain distribution, contact pressure and deflection also greatly changed with the adhesive debonding. After complete peeling, the deflection of the specimen was 3.09 times that of the unpeeled because it was no longer an integral beam.

To evaluate the mechanical performance under two eccentric compression directions, 80 laminated bamboo lumber (LBL) column specimens were tested and analysed. Mechanical properties along two directions were compared. Bamboo nodes and drill hole are two main failure reasons for the specimens under two eccentric directions. More crack layers appeared for radial eccentric direction group specimens due to the layer structure. No matter which eccentric directions they are, the lateral deflection curves are close to the sine line, and the strain across the cross section of the LBL column for each specimen is basically linear throughout the loading process, following standard normal section bending theory. The mechanical properties for two directions are similar with each other and could follow the same design rules. Although the mechanical properties are similar for both LBL columns and parallel bamboo strand lumber (PBSL) columns as a whole, there are still some clear performance differences between the two kinds of materials. Combined all the test data under two eccentric directions, an equation for calculating the radial eccentricity influencing coefficient u e of LBL columns is proposed. The calculation results obtained from the equations give a good agreement with the test results.
