Mechanical Properties of PVC Fiber-Reinforced Concrete—Effects of Fiber Content and Length

Tarikul Islam,

et al.

Abstract: This paper presents the key mechanical properties of PVC fiber-reinforced concrete. Six concrete mixtures were produced using plastic fibers obtained from clear PVC sheets. Three concrete mixtures were made using 20 mm long PVC fibers, whereas the other three were prepared with 40 mm long PVC fibers. The fiber content was varied in the range of 0–1.5 wt.% of cement for each length of fiber. The fresh concrete mixtures were tested for workability in terms of the slump. The hardened concretes were tested for the… Show more

“…Reinforcing concrete by waste plastic fibers was successfully used to improve the concrete flexural toughness compared to the control mixture, besides lessening the environmental pollution due to waste synthetic polyester, nylon, and polyethylene fibers [ [79] , [80] , [81] , [82] ]. This is basically due to the reinforced cementitious materials by waste synthetic fiber increases the ductility of cementing materials, consequently, improves the flexural capacity and post cracking strength [ 76 , 83 , 84 ].…”

“…The necessity for utilizing waste materials is increasingly evident [19]. Increasing energy efficiency and using industrial waste instead of raw materials can contribute to eliminating these problems, and its addition into cement pastes made from such waste can have electrical and mechanical properties similar to those of pure Portland cements at a lower cost per unit volume [20].…”
