Mechanical properties of rigid polyurethane composites reinforced with surface treated ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene fibers

Abstract: The mechanical properties of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers reinforced rigid polyurethane (PU) composites were studied, and the effects of the fiber surface treatment and the mass fraction were discussed. Chromic acid was used to treat the UHMWPE fibers, and polyurethane composites were prepared with 0.1 to 0.6 wt% as-received and treated UHMWPE fibers. Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared demonstrated that oxygen-containing functional groups were efficiently grafted … Show more

“…Consequently, it is important to manufacture polyurethane foams (PUFs) for high‐performance applications . One of the major ways of producing PUFs with superior strength in recent years has been to use reinforcements of different kinds, such as nanoparticles like carbon nanotubes, carbides, fibers, fabrics and bio additives . Depending on the type of reinforcement, the resulting Polyurethane Composites (PUCs) exhibit remarkable properties, such as high‐impact resistance, low density, high strength to weight ratio, high elasticity, and corrosion and abrasion resistance …”

“…In Figure 8, the broad bands at 2918 cm −1 and 2850 cm −1 belong to the Asymmetric and Symmetric Stretching Absorption of -CH 2 -, respectively; the broad bands at 1465 cm −1 and 720 cm −1 belong to the bending and rocking deformation absorption of -CH 2 -, respectively [31]. Compared with unmodified UHMWPE fiber, three new absorption peaks are observed at around 1715 cm −1 , 1175 cm −1 and 1050 cm −1 in method F-b and method F-f, which belongs to the characteristic absorption of the C=O [32], C-O-C and -OH, respectively.…”

“…It should be noted that in most cases, PCM products do not possess the maximum level of strength properties in comparison with other materials, but in the aggregate of various parameters they surpass many others. As an example, we can cite carbon fiber plastics and fiberglass, which have a combination of lightness and strength (Meng, Li, Ma, Cao, Wang, 2018).…”
