Mechanical properties of sol–gel coatings on polycarbonate: a review

Abstract: Organic/inorganic hybrid coatings prepared via the sol-gel process have received lot of interests during the early twenty-first century. Devices obtained thanks to this low-temperature route display a large panel of bulk and surface properties that can be modulated according to the target. Moreover, this versatility enables to offer solutions in various domains and industrial applications such as microelectronics, optic, aeronautic, automotive, health. When the aimed application required polymer as substrate, … Show more

“…Examples of these types of products were reported by different authors [16,17,162,164]. In the last fifteen years, several review articles have been published in the design and application of OIH materials, and mostly were approached from the point of view of materials [2,3,12,27,36,112,148,[178][179][180][181][182]. Table 2 shows the most relevant review manuscripts published since 2016 focused on OIH sol-gel materials.…”

“…This can be achieved through the use of an organo-alkoxysilane. The organic component will bring flexibility to the final network modulating either the chemical or the mechanical properties [27]. Organic components can be introduced into the inorganic network as network modifiers or as network formers [2].…”

“…The main difference between nanoindentation and other common hardness tests is that with nanoindentation, mechanical properties are extracted by sampling from the surface to nanometer depths, whereas common indenters work deeper in the solid body (Brotzen, ). Nanoindentation relies on the characterization of the plastic deformation of the coating due to a compressive force using a tip of well‐defined geometry (Le Bail, Benayoun, & Toury, ). The tip moves down in the vertical direction and indents the coating (see Figure ).…”
