Mechanical Properties Of The Ceramic Open-Cell Foams Of Variable Cell Sizes

Abstract: The mechanical properties and numerical model of ceramic alumina open-cell foam, which is produced by the chemical method of gelcasting with different cell sizes (porosities) are presented. Geometric characteristics of real foam samples were estimated from tomographic and scanning electron microscopy images. Using this information, numerical foam model was proposed. A good agreement between the numerical model and the results elaborated from microtomography was obtained. To simulate the deformation processes t… Show more

“…As seen in Fig. 16 , the results of this current work generally are also in a good agreement with the experimental data by Z. Nowak et al, who studied the elastic responses of alumina foams with porosity of 74-90% under compression loadings [42]. For smaller values of ε, however, Fig.…”

“…Ceramic foams made of alumina were investigated in this work. The Young's modulus E s and Poisson's ratio v s of the alumina were, respectively, taken to be 370 GPa and 0.22 [42]. Each strut of the foams was modeled by Timoshenko beam elements (i.e., element type Beam189 in ANSYS which is a three-node beam element).…”

“…In the list above, several parameters appear: the distortional strain energy , the volumetric strain energy , and the thermal strain energy . These classical energies are corrected by the influence functions and which are a kind of factors introducing new parameters into the criterion [ 12 , 16 , 26 , 27 ].…”

“…First, so‐called 3‐3 group was discovered and evaluated. Composites of this group consist of the ceramic skeleton, fabricated via replamine, 10 BURPS, 11 or gel‐casting 12,13 processes, which is further infiltrated by the polymer matrix. They possess some beneficial properties, such as a decoupling negative contribution from lateral stress, but their production process is rather complex 9 .…”
