Mechanical Properties of Wood: A Review

Abstract: The use of wood in construction requires knowledge of the mechanical properties and the particularities that wood presents in comparison with other materials used for structural purposes such as steel, concrete, brick, or stone. The introduction mentions the environmental advantages that justify the use of wood today. The orthotropy of wood is one of the differentiating characteristics that must be taken into account when studying its behaviour. The determination of the properties of wood is then addressed fro… Show more

“…This advantageous situation aligns with the global push for eco-conscious construction solutions, making North America a key player in the adoption of timber in high-rise buildings. Moreover, North America can look back on a long-established tradition of wooden construction [84]. However, it is essential to distinguish that this tradition has primarily revolved around conventional wood construction techniques, rather than the specialized category of mass timber.…”

“…Considering the significantly higher plasticity of PLA then the one of the wood, the wood was considered purely elastic in the present model. Its material properties are demonstrated in Table 3 [17,18]. Von Mises yield function was applied for both filler and matrix included in the model (8,9).…”

“…(Dade-Robertson 2023) is also provocative for clearly, we have at least been growing the biological components of a building in the form of log cabins to straw roof since antiquity. Jumping forward to modern construction by robotic arms (Achim Menges et al 2016), the scaling of mass timbers for buildings (Ayanleye et al 2022), and finetuning of mechanical properties by engineered wood products (Arriaga et al 2023;He et al 2023;Kuzman and Sandberg 2023). We have developed multiple methods and wonderful feats of engineering biomaterial to meet our needs from the forest nursery to the wood itself used into constructions (Arriaga et al 2023;Evans 2001).…”

Nevertheless, modification of material properties after harvest falls short of the envisioned growth of a building from a single tree.…”
