The purpose of this research is to investigate the Critical Heat Flux (CHF) and its relationship with thermal inertia during impact of a droplet on hot horizontal surface. In the study, three (3) different types of material were used which were Aluminum, Brass and Stainless Steel (304). The materials dimension were 50.0 mm in diameter and 30.0 mm in height. The materials were polished until they became a mirror polished surface. Ethanol was used as the test liquid. The droplet diameter was approximately 3.528 mm. The impact height was approximately 65.0 mm corresponding to impact velocity of 1.129 m/s. The evaporation lifetime was measured in seconds by using a digital stopwatch. As a result, it was observed that the CHF occurred at the surface temperatures of 105, 120 and 160 °C for aluminum, brass and stainless steel, respectively. It was also observed that all CHF data showed an evaporation lifetime below 1 sec order which is similar with other literatures.

The miniaturization boiling (micro-bubble emission boiling [MEB]) phenomenon, with a high heat removal capacity that contributes considerably to the cooling of the divertor of the nuclear fusion reactor, was discovered in the early 1980s. Extensive research on MEB has been performed since its discovery. However, the progress of the application has been delayed because the generation mechanism of MEB remains unclear. Reasons for this lack of clarity include the complexity of the phenomenon itself and the high-speed phase change phenomenon in which boiling and condensation are rapidly generated. In addition, a more advanced thermal technique is required to realize the MEB phenomenon at the laboratory scale. To the authors’ knowledge, few studies have discussed the rush mechanism of subcooled liquid to the heating surface, which is critical to elucidating the mechanism behind MEB. This study used photographic images to verify that the cavitation phenomenon spreads to the inside of the superheated liquid on the heating surface and thus clarify the mechanism of MEB.

The main objective of this paper is to conduct a manual drop test experiment to investigate the actual size and volume of a single droplet. Both experimental result and theoretical value were calculated for comparison. In this study methanol was chosen as the test liquid. The drop test was repeated numerous times with the droplet size measurement being calculated for every 50, 100 and 150 drops. A digital weight measurement was used to precisely measure the droplet weight in the drop test. Meanwhile for theoretical calculation, measurement was made based on chemical properties of the liquid itself. Based on the comparison, it was found that the experimental measurement of droplet size and volume is comparable with the theoretical calculation.
