Mechanism of Action of Two Flavone Isomers Targeting Cancer Cells with Varying Cell Differentiation Status

Abstract: Apoptosis can be triggered in two different ways, through the intrinsic or the extrinsic pathway. The intrinsic pathway is mediated by the mitochondria via the release of cytochrome C while the extrinsic pathway is prompted by death receptor signals and bypasses the mitochondria. These two pathways are closely related to cell proliferation and survival signaling cascades, which thereby constitute possible targets for cancer therapy. In previous studies we introduced two plant derived isomeric flavonoids, flavo… Show more

“…They are an indispensable component in a variety of nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, medicinal and cosmetic applications. This is attributed to their antioxidative ( 125 ) , anti-inflammatory ( 126 ) , anti-mutagenic ( 127 ) and anti-carcinogenic ( 128 ) properties coupled with their capacity to modulate key cellular enzyme functions ( 129 ) . Flavonoids act in plants as antioxidants, antimicrobials, photoreceptors, visual attractors, feeding repellents, and for light screening.…”

“…Flavonoids are a family of polyphenols with subclasses, including flavones, flavanols, isoflavones, flavanones, and chalcones. They are known to be highly effective antioxidants and possess anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-mutagenic, and anti-carcinogenic properties [ 3 , 4 , 5 ]. Flavonoids are known to be essential components in a number of nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, medicinal, and cosmetic products [ 3 ].…”

“…Most of the cancer preventive effects of flavonoids have been shown in animal and cell culture studies [ 17 , 18 , 19 ]. Freeze-dried berries enriched in anthocyanins have been evaluated for chemopreventive potential of premalignant oral lesions [ 20 , 21 , 22 ], familial adenomatous polyposis [ 23 , 24 ], Barrett’s esophagus [ 25 ], and esophageal dysplastic lesions [ 26 ].…”
