Mechanism of emergence of intense vibrations of turbines on the Sayano-Shushensk hydro power plant

Abstract: ON THE SAYANO-SHUSHENSK HYDRO POWER PLANT UDC 621.51:534 V. B. Kurzin and V. S. Seleznev It is demonstrated that the level of vibrations of turbines on the Sayano-Shushensk hydro power plant is enhanced by the capability of a compressible fluid to perform its own hydroacoustic oscillations (which can be unstable) in the turbine duct. Based on the previously obtained results of solving the problem of natural hydroacoustic oscillations in the turbine duct and some ideas about turbine interaction with an unsteady… Show more

“…Based on the vibration transmission models above, the transmission ratios of two units in horizontal vibration and vertical vibration are obtained, respectively, as shown in Equation 3and Equation (6). In the equations, parameters included unit mass m, bedrock mass M, horizontal compression stiffness of bedrock K x , vertical compression stiffness of bedrock K z , shear stiffness G z , and frequency of vibration source load ω. Vibration transmission ratios among units are determined by these parameters in the simplified model.…”

“…For example, hydropower stations, such as XiaoLangDi, ErTan, and YanTan in China have experienced powerhouse safety problems some extent [4,5]. The most serious safety problem of powerhouse occurred in Russia, the unit #2 of the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydropower problem of powerhouse occurred in Russia, the unit #2 of the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydropower station in Yenisei River experienced severe vibration after overload operation, leading to fatigue damage to the cap fixed bolts, and resulting in great casualties and property loss [6,7].…”

“…A hydraulic-turbine-governing system (HTGS) is an important part of a hydropower station system and affects the safe and stable operation of the entire set of hydroelectric generator units and even the grid system [9][10][11]. At present, many hydropower-generating units at large-and medium-sized hydropower stations suffer from different degrees of stability problems [12][13][14]. Therefore, the stability and effective control of an HTGS is vital.…”

“…It is known [36], that the accident was caused by vibrations in the hydropower unit. Various possible reasons of occurrence of such vibrations were discussed in [36,18]. However main attention in these works was given to the dynamical processes in the turbines and the full mathematical model turbine-speed governorsynchronous generator was not considered.…”
