Mechanism of Oxidization of Graphite to Graphene Oxide by the Hummers Method

Abstract: The mechanism of oxidizing reaction in the preparation of graphene oxide (GO) by a chemical oxidation method remains unclear. The main oxidant of graphite oxide has not been determined. Here, we show a new mechanism in which Mn 2 O 7 , the main oxidant, is heated to decompose oxygen atoms and react with graphite. The whole preparation process constitutes of four distinct independent steps, different from the three steps of literature registration, and each step has… Show more

“…It is reasonable to expect that ODs can be formed during the strong oxidation of graphite, thereby producing small and highly oxidized carbonaceous fragments of different sizes. 41,76 Pan and Aksay 77 showed that the upper layers of graphite can undergo multiple crack formations along the course of oxidation. They observed that cracks are formed even when short oxidation times (<6 h) are used (Fig.…”

“…This gives emphasized and ideal graphene with functionality includes, thin gauge film, stronger absorption peak, stretching vibration peak, and a high degree of oxidation. 72 It is suggested that the addition of graphene nanoplatelets could be possibly environmentally friendly as it reduces 5% production of portland cement and 21% of global warming. The introduction of epoxy/GNP in the cement matrix produces a valuable sensor that not only senses the cracks but also maps the location of damage, in addition to sensing the curing process and temperature change beyond the adequate mechanical and electrical properties.…”

“…Graphene oxide is produced by oxidation of graphite, which leads to increased spacing between the layers. The classic chemical oxidation methods for the preparation of GO utilize strong oxidants such as H 2 SO 4 , KMnO 4 and NaNO 3 [ 35 ]. Several modifications based on the Hummers method include preoxidation treatment, changing the oxidation intercalation agent, and electrochemically, ultrasonic or microwave assisted methods.…”
