Mechanism of structural ordering of monodisperse spherical silica particles in concentrated alcohol suspensions

Abstract: Structural ordering of monodispersed spherical silica particles (MSSP) occurs in ammonia stabilized concentrated suspensions obtained by tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) hydrolysis in alcohol-aqueous solutions in the ammonia concentration range from 0.0001 to 0.0008 mol/L. MSSP interaction follows the DLFO (Deryagin, Landau, Ferway, and Overbeck) mechanism when electrostatic repulsive forces between the particles predominate, and the structural ordering requires straightened conditions, which are provided by suspensio… Show more

“…This product is the ratio of the MSSP radius to the thickness of the ion atmosphere and it can be both below and above unity. The product χr is the key parameter for the description of the interparticle interaction in the DLVO theory [7] or for the description of the supramolecular crystallization in concentrated suspensions of MSSP [9,10]. Thus, the flow J is determined, first, by the size of the structural unit of the supramolecular crystallization [9,10] (MSSP together with ion atmosphere), and, second, by the ratio between r and τ within this structural unit.…”

“…Создание структур с фотонной запрещённой зоной осложняется тем, что период модуляции показателя преломления должен быть того же порядка, что и длина волны распространяющегося света. Существует потенциально простой и дешёвый метод изготовления таких структур на основе самосборки сферических частиц кремнезёма под действием сил гравитации [9]. Метод обеспечивает создание искусственного объёмного опала, однако количество дефектов в таких опалах является довольно значительным, что затрудняет его использование в различных устройствах.…”
