It has been proposed that the most radiosensitive site of these membranous elements is membrane-binding SH (Archer and Wills 1973) and that GSH or other SH compounds act as radioprotectors by scavenging free radicals or supplying hydrogen to prevent oxidative injury in the membranes (Shapiro et al 1966) .
