Mechanochemistry assisted asymmetric organocatalysis: A sustainable approach

Abstract: SummaryBall-milling and pestle and mortar grinding have emerged as powerful methods for the development of environmentally benign chemical transformations. Recently, the use of these mechanochemical techniques in asymmetric organocatalysis has increased. This review highlights the progress in asymmetric organocatalytic reactions assisted by mechanochemical techniques.

“…These are, for example, proline and its derivatives, cinchona alkaloids, and thiourea systems [2]. Moreover, organocatalytic reactions can be carried out not only under standard chemical conditions, but also by invoking other techniques like ultrasounds [3] or mechanochemistry [4]. Over the last decade, the numerous compounds exhibiting various biological activities such as indole alkaloids [5] and other alkaloids [6] have been synthesized through the use of one or more organocatalytic approaches.…”

“…35 Interestingly, application of grinding with a mortar and pestle in the highly stereoselective Michael addition of trisubstituted b-ketoesters to nitroalkene derivatives was recently reported by Chimni's group. 36 (7) in a ball-mill. 34 As already mentioned, the use of chiral thioureas as organocatalysts in asymmetric Michael additions has been highly successful.…”

“…The past years have witnessed remarkable progress in asymmetric organocatalysis. [3] Moreover, metal-catalyzed asymmetric reaction has been used as another key tactic. [4] Remarkable efforts have also been made for the catalysis of chiral pyrazolone derivatives.…”
