Mechatronics: Experiential Learning and the Stimulation of Thinking Skills

Abstract: The development of experiential learning methodologies is gaining attention, due to its contributions to enhancing education quality. It focuses on developing competencies, and build-up added values, such as creative and critical thinking skills, with the aim of improving the quality of learning. The interdisciplinary mechatronics field accommodates a coherent interactive concurrent design process that facilitates innovation and develops the desired skills by adopting experiential learning approaches. “…The study reveals that a guided peer review can provide evaluation scores close to the instructor evaluation and enhance the students' performance [46]. Problem-based and student-centered learning approaches combine experiential learning that improves students' performance and critical thinking for an engineering course, as indicated in [47].…”

“…Accordingly, students could provide valuable feedback through this outcome. After this feedback, students believed that this new learning method was effective enough to participate actively in future experiential activities to gain additional knowledge (Habib et al, 2021). This result also explains why many students expressed an interest in using this method in future lessons.…”

“…The second group's interpretation necessitates thorough preparation and a lengthy process to conclude (Davidovitch et al, 2014). As such, experiential learning is a form of active learning in which students are actively involved in learning through direct participation, supported by experience, analysis, and reflection (Mutmainah et al, 2019;Habib et al, 2021). Furthermore, the author Voukelatou (2019) claims that students are the driving force behind the learning process and that the effectiveness of learning is influenced by the student's "learning style" and "thinking".…”

“…This study was performed under the initiative of UAE University to promote research activities among undergrad students in order to prepare the new generation of students for the market while studying at the university. This is important since potential employers require fresh graduates to have research experienced and developed soft skills [51]. This requirement becomes an obligation to the universities nowadays to tackle the changing requirements of the job market and make the university environment adapt to emerging needs and trends.…”
