Meckel's diverticulum in the adult

Abstract: The management of Meckel's diverticulum (MD) incidentally detected in adults remains controversial. To assess the risk involved in excision of such diverticula and the incidence of complications arising from MD in adult life, we analysed 260 cases of MD found at laparotomy in a baseline population during a 15-year period. There were 148 symptomless and 112 symptom-producing diverticula, with intestinal obstruction as the most common complication. Assuming a 2 per cent general incidence of MD, the complication … Show more

“…Meckel's diverticulum occurs in 0.4-4% of the population (but only 5% of people with it encounter problems) and are found two times more frequently in males compared with females (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8). The total lifetime complication (intestinal hemorrhage, intestinal obstruction, inflammation and rarely tumoural formation) incidence is 4-5% and are usually seen in childhood (9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14).…”

“…Most patients are asymptomatic; however, in those who develop symptoms, the disease can mimic other abdominal disorders, such as inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal (GI) ulcers, and appendicitis. The complication rate was estimated at approximately 4% during the total lifetime (2). GI bleeding is a common complication in symptomatic MD patients.…”
