The production of spare parts using Additive Manufacturing (AM) is an emerging area that impacts the supply chain management. To give designers a way to proceed at the moment of redesign and produce a spare part using AM, this contribution presents a methodology for the design and manufacturing of digital spare parts using AM in decentralized facilities. The redesign of the spare parts is tackled by giving design considerations based on agile hardware development practices to improve the quality of the spare parts and reduce the lead time. Since this methodology is derived from different case studies of the military over two years, the approach is suited for the defence industry but can be adapted to other industries that operate reduced facilities abroad. Additionally, three different use cases following the methodology are presented. The weaknesses of the processes are highlighted and some recommendations for production engineers and designers are given.

Innovation requires methodologies that enable the continuous development of effective and context-relevant solutions. Thus, the frequent comparison of development goals and actual user needs is of crucial importance. Prototyping is a widely used tool for User Integration that supports the mutual process of understanding between designer and user. Yet, this usage of nonverbal communication in the course of the process is ambiguous and brings along its specific challenges for the designer. An enhanced system description of the prototyping process seems necessary to provide the developer with wellfounded and comprehensible guidelines. Therefore, the present work analyses the similarities and differences of disturbance variables the designer may encounter in different prototyping processes.

Originally developed for the software industry, agile development is being applied in the hardware field nowadays as well due to its benefits when having to deal with volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) conditions. However, certain complications arise when applying the concept of agility in the hardware. In this publication, based on the challenges identified by Ovesen in 2012, the current challenges of agile development for hardware are gathered using an embedded design approach, ensuring its actuality based on the latest surveys and empirical data. The current state regarding the challenges is displayed and its interrelations as well as their advancements compared to seven years ago is discussed. Moreover, an attempt to explain the difficulties of applying agile development is given by a hardware-related complexity model.
