Media System

Abstract: The concept of media system is fundamental to the use of the comparative method in media studies. This entry explores the intellectual roots of that concept in general systems theory, and a number of issues about the scope and conceptualization of media systems. It examines the strengths and weaknesses of two main approaches to comparative analysis, one focusing on analysis of media systems as wholes, often using case study methods, and one focusing on relationships among variables across systems, often using … Show more

“…Only since the 1960s can the German media system be counted among the democratic corporatist model according to Comparing Media Systems by Hallin and Mancini (2004). While defending their models and their criteria, the authors had to admit that the multiple changes in the global media environments must be considered when researching media systems nowadays (Hallin, 2020; Hallin and Mancini, 2017; Mancini, 2020). According to Brüggemann and colleagues (2014, see also Humprecht et al, 2022), Germany can be considered as prototypical for the central cluster within the democratic corporatist model, which was formed after empirically revisiting the framework of Hallin and Mancini.…”

“…To create a dataset with some meaningful variation that allows for a more general analysis, we took a more systematic approach. First, we identified a set of twelve countries falling into different media system categories (Hallin, 2016) where the existence of AI guidelines was already known or likely to be expected. These countries can be grouped into four main geographical regions: Western Europe (Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom), Scandinavia (Finland, Norway, and Sweden), North America (Canada and the United States), and the Global South 2 (Brazil and India).…”

“…As in all ideal-typification, some national systems are presented as hybrid realizations of two models/ideal-types. Hallin and Mancini have each recently sought to bolster the concept of media system and Mancini has acknowledged explicitly that it was not as well theorized initially as it might have been (Hallin, 2016;Mancini, 2015) My pressing of media system as ideal-type into the service of an articulation with Worsley's programme aims to further such bolstering. 8.…”
