Mediating worklife learning and the digitalisation of work

Abstract: Competence in contemporary working life requirements is increasingly aligned with electronically mediated tasks and work roles: ie, the digitalisation of work. This alignment necessitates workers learning and utilising the conceptual knowledge and ways of working needed for this work. This knowledge is often distinct from and displaces workers' existing ways of knowing, which threatens their competence and sense of self. Yet, it can be difficult to access, learn and practice, requiring it to be mediated throug… Show more

“…Creating reflexive spaces for stakeholders across different system contexts and levels could therefore potentially create higher awareness and understanding among different stakeholders related to how local adjustments could have systemic implications a in a complex adaptive healthcare system. Our findings support others that learning processes to a higher degree are embedded in the healthcare professionals every day work activities [25,63]. Integrating reflexive spaces and awareness of what goes right in healthcare provision and why, as a part of healthcare professionals everyday work practice could potentially increase learning potentials within and across different levels in the healthcare system, and as a result contribute to strengthen resilient performance.…”

“…Hence, more complex tasks remain for which routine solutions are not available (Littlejohn and Margaryan, 2014;Frey and Osborne, 2017;Bughin et al, 2018). Secondly, more and more software is used at office workplaces for organizational operations and decision-making (Venkatesh and Bala, 2008;Eikhof, 2012;Billett, 2021). Therefore, the skills needed in working life are increasingly linked to "electronically mediated tasks and work roles" (Billett, 2021, p. 1).…”

“…While our findings do not show any evidence of digitalization involving only either benefits or obstacles for patient communication, we suggest that more attention must be given to the rigidity of digitalization as well as possible rule-based errors. Although digitalization provides novel means and ends, as also suggested by Billett (2021), it also comes with a novel set of rules, conditions and limitations in conducting work, for example, patient communication. Thus, although health-care professionals find that they need to widen their knowledge of digital means (Ivaldi et al , 2022; Jarva et al , 2022; Saari et al , 2019), they might also need to consider whether digital conditions and limitations call for nondigitalized or less digitally advanced means of communication.…”

“…It is relevant to note that the heterogeneity and explorative improvization with materials relate to what Billett (2006) refers to as the requirements of work. When such requirements change due to, for example, digitalization coming with new standards, technical–social procedures or information availability, so does the access to expertise and resources, which therefore needs more scholarly attention (Billett, 2021; Billett and Choy, 2013).…”
