Medical Manufacturing Innovations

Abstract: The purpose of these studies was to improve the design and manufacturing process by selective laser melting, of new medical implants. After manufacturing process, the implants were measured, microscopically and mechanical analyzed. Implants manufactured by AM can be an attractive option for surface coatings to improve the osseointegration process. The main advantages of customized implants made by AM process are: the precise adaptation to the region of implantation, better cosmesis, reduced surgical times and … Show more

“…Applications of the additive manufacturing process in medicine have been reported since 1994, which have led to the development of personalized implants for the precise reconstruction of bone structure [27,28]. There are several advantages of additive manufacturing over conventional manufacturing processes, such as control of the porosity and roughness of the blocks (printed parts), complete control over geometry, the possibility of creating structures with interconnected pore systems, precise details of anatomy, low material waste, production of several pieces at once, ability to create sophisticated details and complex internal geometries, high design fidelity, process reliability, and high reproducibility [27][28][29]. Thus, osteoconductive grafts manufactured by additive manufacturing may provide an alternative solution for the reconstruction of significant bone defects and rehabilitation of patients with severe craniofacial bone atrophy, such as early dental loss, congenital malformation, or after resection of cysts and tumors [30].…”

“…Um deles é a impressão 3D que possui várias vantagens. O uso desse processo de confecção já foi descrito desde 1994 na medicina, o que levou ao desenvolvimento de enxertos personalizados para reconstruções ósseas na reabilitação com implantes (29,30). O presente estudo usou essa tecnologia de impressão 3D para produzir um enxerto em bloco de hidroxiapatita, sendo uma técnica que reduz o desperdício de material, por ser aditiva.…”
