Abstract

The purpose of this entry is to describe electronic medical records (EMRs) and patient portals and highlight some of the regulations and challenges associated with these health information technologies (HITs). HITs hold much promise for healthcare systems as they can reduce paper waste, improve communication between patients and clinicians, and offer ways to improve health outcomes.
