Medical specialists care and hospital costs for low back pain in the Netherlands

Abstract: Low back pain patients consult various specialists, with the majority first referred to the neurologist. More than half of the LBD patients require only one DTC and less than 10% needed five DTC's or more. The largest portion of the hospital costs for LBP patients is allocated to the anaesthesiology and neurosurgery specialisms.

“…In 2007, the costs for CLBP represented 0.6% of the gross national product in the Netherlands [ 7 ]. Direct healthcare costs are, for instance, caused by patients searching for pain treatment [ 2 , 5 , 8 , 9 ]. Indirect (societal) costs represent secondary consequences of CLBP, the losses resulting from morbidity or disability, mainly caused by work absenteeism and informal caregiving [ 10 , 11 ].…”

“…Indirect (societal) costs represent secondary consequences of CLBP, the losses resulting from morbidity or disability, mainly caused by work absenteeism and informal caregiving [ 10 , 11 ]. Although indirect costs are known to be the highest cost factor for CLBP, direct healthcare costs, like medical specialist care and hospital costs, for low back pain are high as well [ 5 , 8 , 11 ].…”

“…Further, myofibroblasts and contractile activities have also been observed in fasciae [8]. Because of these various findings, fasciae are increasingly becoming the focus of scientific research in terms of musculoskeletal disorders such as low back pain, which presents one of the most important and cost-intensive complaints [9][10][11][12]. In this context, the thoracolumbar fascia plays a central role because it serves as both a pivot and an anchor.…”

“…The main justification is that LBP is the main cause of chronic pain (7) , representing the second leading cause of functional disability in the world (8) . Besides being a serious welfare problem for people suffering from this condition, LBP has been configured as an important economic problem, generating high costs for the health system (9) . In young population, different factors have been associated with a higher probability of occurrence of LBP, such as participation in competitive sports, female sex, peak growth phase, adverse psychosocial factors, older age, previous history of back injury and history family (10) .…”
