Objective Mental health problems among older adults are becoming a growing public health concern in South Asia due to continued changes in population dynamics caused by declining fertility rates and increasing life expectancy. This scoping review aimed to explore and summarize evidence about mental health interventions and their impacts on geriatric mental health and highlight gaps and areas for future research. Methods We searched six electronic databases and additional sources for experimental/non-experimental studies evaluating the effectiveness of geriatric mental health interventions in eight countries in the South Asia region from the date of inception of each database up to August 5, 2022. Following the preliminary screening, we extracted data from the eligible articles using a Microsoft Excel data extraction worksheet. We followed Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidelines for this scoping review and reported evidence adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) checklist. Results From a total of 3432 potential articles retrieved, 19 were included in this review following pre-determined eligibility criteria. Across studies, mental health interventions can be broadly categorized into the following types– 1) traditional Yoga, Tai chi, or other meditative movements; 2) behavioral, occupational, or learning-based interventions; 3) tech-based interventions; 4) music therapy; and 5) new healthcare model. The evidence was predominantly based on India (n = 16), whereas three articles were identified from Pakistan. No article was found from six other South Asian countries. Depression and anxiety were the most frequent mental health outcomes, followed by quality of life, cognitive function, self-esteem, physical performance, and many more. Conclusion Although limited, this review found various interventions that have varying effects on different geriatric mental health outcomes. A handful of evidence on mental health intervention in South Asia indicates a lack of acknowledgment that may develop a serious paucity of geriatric mental health practice. Therefore, future researchers are encouraged to conduct empirical studies to understand disease burden, including associated factors of geriatric mental health, which may help to construct contextually appropriate mental health interventions in this region.

Background: Indonesia faces many challenges after the COVID-19 outbreaks, particularly the needs of medical doctor, which lead to almost all university provide a doctor faculty. To produce a good quality doctor, not only in skills and knowledge including communication skills with patients and colleagues is still challenging. Objectives: This editorial was written to summarized the challenge of medical doctor in the future. Editorial: A good quality doctor, not only in skills and knowledge including communication skills with patients and colleagues. In addition, doctors need to be able to utilize medical technology or information technology. Communication skill is needed to bridge the relationship of doctor-patients by negotiation-consensus communication is able to improve the patient’s outcome. Inter-collegial relationship is needed as a part of teamwork communication for a better patient’s outcome. Doctor needs to update their skill on information technology and medical technology as a part of medical services on the society. Conclusion: To be a good medical doctor, not only need a medical skill, but also communication skills, empathy and humanity, respectful, and professional. A doctor is not only a profession, but also an effort of saving the patient’s life from diseases.

La profesión médica, influenciada por factores históricos y contemporáneos, está en constante evolución. Los avances tecnológicos, cambios sociales, factores económicos y desarrollos científicos han moldeado la percepción de los médicos en la sociedad. La autorregulación ética, junto con la formación médica de alta calidad, es fundamental para preparar profesionales competentes y éticos. Los médicos del siglo XXI desempeñan un papel crucial en la atención, educación sanitaria y promoción de la salud. A pesar de desafíos como el monopolio y el elitismo, se argumenta que no necesariamente disminuyen el prestigio de la profesión y pueden abordarse éticamente. La tecnología ha mejorado el diagnóstico y tratamiento médico, así como la telemedicina, pero plantea desafíos éticos y de privacidad. Asimismo, el aumento de la burocracia en la atención médica genera preocupaciones sobre la calidad y eficiencia de los servicios, pero se están implementando estrategias para abordarlo y mantener el profesionalismo centrado en el paciente. La medicina es una disciplina en constante cambio que se adapta a un entorno dinámico, manteniendo valores éticos y la calidad de la atención. La profesión médica evolucionará con los avances tecnológicos y sociales, y es crucial preservar la ética y la humanidad en la práctica médica del futuro.
