Medicinal and biological values of Callistemon viminalis extracts: History, current situation and prospects

Abstract: Callistemon viminalis (C. viminalis) is a plant that has been reported to have various medicinal values such as antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant activities and other pharmaceutical and insecticidal properties. This review covers the potentials, applications and properties of different extracts from different parts (branches, flowers, fruits, bark, leaves) of C. viminalis. Furthermore, the chemical structures of the bioactive compounds were reported for biological activities. All the results supported the… Show more

“…This resistance had been attributed to the additional outer membrane (this is likely the case in our study) and that most resistant bacterium was D. solani . Finally, the essential oils compositions and percentages obtained from this study are comparable to studies on geranium [ 53 ], citrus [ 54 ], C. viminalis [ 55 ], R. officinallis [ 47 ], Artimisia [ 45 ], and O. vulgare [ 44 ]. However, the essential oils composition of the current collection of horticultural crops differed in some cases from those reported in the literature for S. molle (mainly composed of pinene [ 56 ], T. occidentalis (mainly composed of thujone and fenchone [ 57 ] and O. vulgare (mainly composed of pulegone).…”

“…P- coumaric acid showed antifungal effects against Botrytis cinerea [ 67 ]. Quercetin has antifungal activities against C. albicans [ 68 , 69 , 70 ]. However, this is the first report on the antifungal activities of apigenin 5-glucoside.…”

“…gracilis (Rehder) T.C.Ku and M. toringoides (Rehder) Hughes were obtained in the spring from the arboretum of the University of Guelph, Canada, and vouchered in both Alexandria University, Egypt (Hosam0001050-1052) and the University of Guelph. Bark samples (3 replicates) were dried by lyophilization (Labconco, California, USA) and powdered [3,52]. Of the dried powder (DW), 0.2 g was sonicated in a methanol extraction (10 mL, Chempur, Lublin, Poland) for 2 × 30 min at 30 • C (Sonic-2, POLSONIC, Poland).…”
