Medicinal, nutritional, and nutraceutical potential of Sparassis crispa s. lat.: a review

Abstract: Sparassis crispa is an edible mushroom exhibiting a wide range of medicinal properties. It is recognized for therapeutic value because of the high β-glucan content in the basidiomes. The broad range of its reported curative effects include anti-tumour, anti-cancer, immune-enhancing, hematopoietic, anti-angiogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, wound-healing, antioxidant, anti-coagulant, and anti-hypertensive properties. However, most of the studies are conducted on immunomodulatory and anticancer activitie… Show more

“…As the name suggests, Sparasis crispa (or cauliflower mushrooms) resembles to cauliflower in shape and are combined with red meat, soups and noodle broths. Sparassol (methyl‐2‐hydroxy‐4‐methoxy‐6‐methylbenzoate) is an antimicrobial agent (Sharma et al, 2022). S. crispa was determined as an antihypertensive food and prevented stroke on experimentation in spontaneously hypertensive rats.…”

“…In addition, the dominant position in the world in terms of sensory, nutritional and medicinal properties mainly depends on the type of matrix used . The agronomic technology of Bacillus brasiliensis cultivation is similar to that of Bacillus bisporus cultivation, but some modi cations have been made in the compost. The fermentation process of Volvariella volvacea is divided into two stages: in the rst stage, the waste is wetted, layered and mixed regularly for two weeks, while in the second, the produced substrate is pasteurized and regulated (Sharma and Tapwal et al, 2022).Although the nal quality of the substrate depends on the whole fermentation process, the success of Volvariella volvacea production largely depends on the second stage . During pasteurization, microbial activities generate a lot of heatThese microorganisms play an important role in the preparation of suitable Volvariella volvacea substrate, because the residual ammonia is highly toxic, which will hinder the growth of Volvariella volvacea mycelium(Wang and Liao et al, 2022).…”

“…The anti-obesity effect of S. crispa has been published using high-fat diet rats, and the related ingredients of S. crispa have been suggested in more than 30 different materials, including polysaccharides ( Takeyama et al, 2018 ; Sharma et al, 2022 ). In another previously reported article, trehalose, which is the ingredient of some mushrooms, has an anti-obesity effect ( Arai et al, 2013 ), and ITSc also has disaccharides, particularly trehalose ( Fig.…”
