Mediterranean Diet Adherence and Dietary Attitudes in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Abstract: A specific diet regimen is a promising way of managing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), with the Mediterranean diet (MD) being a likely candidate due to its potential to modulate gut inflammation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate nutritional habits and dietary attitudes of IBD patients, and to assess their adherence to the Mediterranean diet. “…Dalmatian kidney transplant recipients showed adherence to the Mediterranean Diet by only 25% despite living in the area where it has been traditionally consumed for centuries and is a part of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity [ 19 ]. Other research from the same geographical region show the similar adherence to the MeDi (23%) in a healthy population [ 20 ] and even lower adherence in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, another chronic non-communicable disease [ 21 ]. Other studies with KTRs used a different kind of questionnaire which uses nine food groups to assess adherence to the MeDi.…”

“…This could be even more important, as patients with IBD are more frequently assessed with invasive gastrointestinal procedures such as esophagogastroduodenoscopy and ileocolonoscopy compared with the non-IBD population, subsequently exposing both the patient and the examiner to a higher risk of infection[ 34 ]. Finally, the use of IBD immunosuppressive therapies has been associated with an increased risk of infections[ 13 , 14 ]. All of these findings suggest that patients with IBD should be the "perfect" host for SARS-CoV-2 viral infection (Figure 1 ).…”

“…Moreover, the MD seems to be most beneficial for elderly patients. Overall, the MD is considered to have a high potential to modulate gut inflammation and to be a therapeutic and preventive tool for intestinal chronic inflammatory disease [ 40 ].…”
