Two main Miocene facies were recorded in the Gulf of Suez area: a deep marine and a coastal facies. The analysed sections in the Wadi Sudr area belong to the marine facies. The Lower Miocene (Burdigalian) is represented by coastal, shallow marine sediments, rich in coral, algae, gastropods and large pectinids followed by Langhian open marine sediments and Serravallian lagoonal carbonates. The open marine sediments contain well preserved planktonic and benthic foraminifers and abundant ostracods. The parts of the sections containing foraminifers have been correlated with three planktonic foraminiferal zones (Praeorbulina glomerosa Zone, Orbulina Zone and Globorotalia praemenardiiGloborotalia peripheroronda Zone). Two benthic ecozones were defined (Heterolepa dutemplei-Laevidentalina elegans Zone and Bolivina compressa-Elphidium spp. Zone). Two cycles of sea-level changes can be distinguished and correlated with global sea-level cycles Bur5/Lan1 and Ser1. The first (Langhian) cycle culminated in open marine sublittoral to upper bathyal well aerated sediments. The second (Serravallian) cycle was shallower, littoral suboxic sediments were overlaid by euryhaline carbonates. The studied foraminifera-bearing sediments can be correlated with the lower and Middle Badenian of the Central Paratethys. Though the area of the Gulf of Suez and the Central Paratethys were situated in different climatic zones, and influenced by different tectonic events, the main paleoenvironmental events (sea-level changes, oxygen decrease, salinity changes) are comparable. This correspondence shows that the decisive factors triggering these events were global climatic events.

Planktonic foraminiferal ecozones: response of the pelagic environment to palaeoclimatic changes in the eastern Mediterranean Sea

A detailed study of the planktonic environment of the eastern Mediterranean Sea has permitted the reconstruction of the climatic history of this part of the basin during the time span from 9.7 to 6.6 Ma. The eastern Mediterranean Sea is confirmed as having a strong sensitivity to the climatic changes that occurred during that timespan. One of the very few complete hemipelagic successions of the Upper Miocene in Mediterranean is found in Gavdos island (SW Crete). Quantitative and qualitative modifications of the planktonic foraminiferal communities observed in Metochia section exhibit a sequence of biological events summarized in 11 successive main time intervals. The bioevents are defined by frequency peaks and/or local (re)-occurrences or (temporary) disappearances of some of the taxa, in association with more or less important fluctuations of the more common species. The planktonic foraminifera show a strong correlation with sea surface temperature variations and with changes in the physical and chemical properties of the upper water column caused by the climatic instability. Two prominent shifts in faunal parameters divide the period recorded in Metochia section into three major time slices that are discussed in chronological order: a cooling trend from 9,7 to 7,6 Ma, a warmer period from 7,6 to 7,2 Ma and then a cooling trend which finishes at the Messinian.

Evidence for 1.5 km of Uplift of the Central Anatolian Plateau's Southern Margin in the Last 450 kyr and Implications for Its Multiphased Uplift History

At the southern margin of the Central Anatolian Plateau (CAP), marine deposits that overlie the Central Tauride units at up to 2 km of elevation were used to constrain the onset of uplift to the middle‐late Miocene. This study demonstrates that much younger marine deposits cap the southern margin. We recognize the Last Common Occurrence of Neogloboquadrina spp. (sin) (0.61 Ma) and Pseudoemiliania lacunosa (0.467 Ma), which points to an early middle Pleistocene age. The benthic fauna indicates an epibathyal marine environment (400 to 500 m paleodepth), with an associated paleocoastline now at ~1,500 to 1,600 m above sea level. Our new results imply uplift rates of up to 3.21–3.42 mm/yr for the CAP southern margin since the deposition of the young marine units. In the area, the evaluation of late Pleistocene and Holocene uplift rates of ~1 mm/yr points to a post early middle Pleistocene short‐lived period of rapid uplift of the CAP southern margin, which can correlate the short‐lived surface uplift signal in numerical models of slab breakoff. Overall, this work demonstrates that the majority of the modern topography at the CAP southern margin (1,500 to 1,600 m) was only recently acquired, pointing to the absence of a significant orographic barrier along the southern plateau margin prior to 500 ka. The multiphased uplift recognized at the CAP southern margin by previous authors, as well as the fast uplift rate documented in this work, can be linked to lithosphere delamination and subsequent slab breakoff during the Arabian‐Anatolian continental collision.
